Hepatitis Policy

overview

The Facts:

  • Population: Estimated 5.3 million Americans living with chronic hepatitis
  • 55,000 new hepatitis infections each year
  • 75% of people living with hepatitis C are undiagnosed
  • 15-40% of those living with hepatitis will eventually develop liver cirrhosis or hepatocellular carcinoma

NASTAD aims to end the silent epidemic and end hepatitis through a strategic policy and program agenda that includes:

  • Individual and peer-to-peer technical assistance to health departments
  • Advocacy to increase federal appropriations
  • Policy changes to increase access to prevention, care, and treatment services
  • Promotion of a health equity approach to addressing hepatitis
  • Advocacy for increased access to services through a drug user health approach
  • Work in coalition to ensure an adequate, comprehensive national response to hepatitis
