NASTAD's HIV Prevention Programs focus on building the capacity of health departments to:
  • Implement and manage HIV/AIDS prevention programs
  • Assess policy and develop programs
  • Implement the four strategies of CDC’s Advancing HIV Prevention intervention
  • Expand and enhance activities that eliminate racial and ethnic disparities
  • Strengthen HIV/AIDS programs that work with youth
Through funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), NASTAD staff work with state and local AIDS directors and health department staff to support peer-exchange and networking. NASTAD also helps broker agreements with CDC on issues related to health department implementation of HIV prevention cooperative agreements from CDC and works with other national organizations to foster collaboration and coordination at the local level.

Effective HIV Prevention Programs
Implementation of effective HIV prevention interventions: use of cost effectiveness methodologies, a comprehensive approach to preventing blood borne infections among injection drug users(IDUs), individual, community, structural and policy approaches to preventing the sexual transmission of HIV, primary prevention for HIV infected individuals, HIV prevention in communities of color and HIV prevention in under-served/rural areas.

Implementation of Community Planning
Participation in CDC-supported Community Planning Technical Assistance Network providing support to health departments and communities on the effective implementation of community planning. Facilitation of increased coordination between health departments, community planning groups, directly-funded entities and technical assistance providers to maximize resources, build capacity and respond to community-identified priorities.

Reducing Stigma, Discrimination and Disparities
Strategies for reducing stigma, discrimination and disparities impacting the transmission of HIV prevention. Information sharing on the consequences and prevention implications of homophobia, racism, and classism. Focuses on reducing the stigma and discrimination faced by HIV positive individuals.

Primary Prevention for Communities of Color
Information sharing and TA around health department efforts to support prevention in communities of color, particularly on technical assistance and capacity building to minority community-based agencies and targeted HIV testing and referral efforts linking testing to prevention and care services in communities of color. Developing a monograph focused on recommendations for state/local AIDS directors in addressing HIV/AIDS in African American communities, and developing Fact Sheets for each racial/ethnic minority community.

HIV/STD Prevention for Youth
Information exchange and TA on HIV/STD prevention for youth, especially youth in high-risk situations, youth involvement in community planning, state health/education agency collaboration, and proactive strategies for addressing challenges to comprehensive school health and challenges to HIV/STD prevention.
