NASTAD Applauds Release of Institute of Medicine Report on Viral Hepatitis
The Institute of Medicine (IOM) released the report “Hepatitis and Liver Cancer – A National Strategy for Prevention and Control of Hepatitis B and C.” The report highlights a troubling lack of knowledge among health-care and social-service providers, at-risk populations, the general public and policy makers about the devastating impact of viral hepatitis. The report concludes that inadequate public funding for viral hepatitis prevention, control and surveillance programs is an apparent cause.

Activity Summary
NASTAD continues to focus its efforts on activities that positively impact policy, programs, funding and other issues at the state and federal level.  Several examples demonstrate NASTAD's influence at various levels, including:

  • NASTAD's ADAP Crisis Task Force has negotiated with manufacturers of antiretroviral HIV/AIDS drugs to save ADAPs over $300 million since 2003.
  • NASTAD worked with a coalition of community partners to affect major changes to the final versions of legislation to reauthorization the Ryan White CARE Act in December 2006.
  • The success in affecting these changes  greatly reduced the negative impact the bill would have had on states and cities.
  • NASTAD advocated to increase the number of jurisdictions elgibile for new funding through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for testing initiatives and was successful in increasing the number to 26 from the original ten that were suggested.

For more information on these successful efforts or other NASTAD activities, please contact any of the press representatives listed on our Media Contacts page.
